How Do I Know I’m Really Saved?
Introduction:
One of the most important questions a person can ever ask is this: “How do I know I’m really saved?”
Many people say they love God. Many people believe in Jesus. Many people go to church, pray, and read the Bible. But the question is not simply whether we are religious — the question is whether we have truly obeyed the gospel and received what the Bible says is necessary for salvation.
This is not a question to answer based on feelings alone, because feelings can change. Some days you may feel close to God, and other days you may feel distant. Salvation must be based on the Word of God, not emotions.
The good news is that God did not leave us guessing. His Word clearly shows us how we can know whether we belong to Him.
1. Have I obeyed the plan of salvation?
The clearest place to begin is with what the apostles preached.
When the crowd asked Peter what they must do, he gave a direct answer:
“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
— Acts 2:38
This verse gives the biblical response to the gospel:
repent
be baptized in Jesus’ name
receive the Holy Spirit
Salvation is not merely believing facts about Jesus. It is responding in obedience to what He commanded.
Jesus also said:
“He who believes and is baptized will be saved.”
— Gospel of Mark 16:16
Belief and obedience go together.
2. Have I been born again?
Jesus spoke clearly to Nicodemus about salvation.
“Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
— Gospel of John 3:5
Being born of water points to baptism.
Being born of the Spirit points to receiving the Holy Spirit.
Jesus did not present this as optional. He said it is necessary to enter the kingdom of God.
This aligns perfectly with Acts 2:38.
3. Have I been baptized according to Scripture?
The Bible speaks strongly about baptism.
“There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism…”
— First Peter 3:21
Peter directly says baptism now saves us—not because the water itself has magical power, but because it is an act of faith and obedience toward God.
Baptism is the moment we obey the gospel in identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
4. Do I have the Spirit of Christ?
This is one of the clearest verses in the Bible on assurance.
“Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.”
— Epistle to the Romans 8:9
This means salvation is not only about an outward act — it also includes an inward transformation.
The Spirit of God dwelling in you is evidence that you belong to Christ.
Ask yourself:
Do I sense conviction when I sin?
Has God changed my desires?
Is there spiritual fruit growing in my life?
Do I desire holiness?
These are signs of His Spirit at work.
5. Have I asked God for His Spirit?
Jesus gave us this promise:
“How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
— Gospel of Luke 11:13
If you have repented and obeyed in baptism, continue to ask God sincerely for His Spirit.
God is faithful to His Word.
Sometimes people delay because they think they have more time, but salvation is too important to postpone.
Modern-Day Analogy:
Imagine someone says they joined the police academy but never completed the required steps:
they filled out the paperwork
but never attended training
never took the oath
never received the badge
They may feel like an officer, but they have not completed what is required.
In the same way, salvation is not based merely on what we feel. It is based on whether we have obeyed what Christ and His apostles taught.
Conclusion:
So how do you know if you are really saved?
Ask yourself these biblical questions:
Have I truly repented?
Have I been baptized in Jesus’ name?
Have I received the Holy Spirit?
Is the Spirit changing my life?
Salvation is not based on guesswork.
God’s Word gives us confidence.
If you have obeyed the gospel and continue walking with Him, you can have assurance that you belong to Christ.
And if you have not yet obeyed, today is the day to respond.
Don’t put off what God is calling you to do.
