The story of Ruth, Naomi, and Orpah — A Story of Choices and Faith.
There was a woman named Naomi, who lived in Bethlehem with her husband and two sons. During a famine, they moved to the land of Moab, where food was more plentiful.
While in Moab, Naomi’s husband died. Later, her two sons married Moabite women — one named Ruth and the other Orpah. For a time, they lived together as a family. But tragedy struck again: both of Naomi’s sons died, leaving her alone with her two daughters-in-law.
Hearing that the famine in Bethlehem had ended, Naomi decided to return home. She told Ruth and Orpah:
“You are still young. Go back to your families, remarry, and start over. I have nothing left to give you.”
At first, both women wept and said they would stay with Naomi. But after Naomi urged them again, Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye and returned to Moab. Ruth, however, clung to Naomi and made a vow that would echo through history:
“Wherever you go, I will go. Wherever you live, I will live. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.”
So Ruth traveled with Naomi back to Bethlehem.
Once there, Ruth went to work gleaning grain in the fields to provide for them. She worked with humility and faithfulness, and her reputation spread. A man named Boaz, a wealthy and respected landowner, noticed Ruth. But what impressed him wasn’t just her appearance, it was her character, her loyalty to Naomi, and her devotion to the God of Israel.
In time, Ruth and Boaz married, and God blessed them with a son named Obed. Obed became the father of Jesse, who became the father of King David. From this lineage came Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.
Now, Jewish tradition teaches that Orpah returned to her people and, generations later, her descendants included Goliath, the giant David would one day defeat. Whether or not that detail is certain, it paints a powerful picture:
One woman turned back, and her name faded from history.
The other chose loyalty and faith, and her name became part of God’s eternal story.
The Lesson:
The story of Ruth, Naomi, and Orpah is not just about three women in ancient times. It’s about the choices we all face in moments of pain and uncertainty.
Orpah chose the familiar, the comfortable, the easier road.
Ruth chose loyalty, sacrifice, and faith in God’s plan, even when the future was unclear.
Naomi learned that even in bitterness and loss, God was still at work bringing redemption.
And from Ruth’s choice came a legacy that led straight to Jesus.
Takeaway: When life leaves you with nothing but hard choices, don’t take the easy way out. Like Ruth, cling to God. Even in uncertainty, your faithfulness can open the door to blessings you never imagined — blessings that ripple far beyond your own lifetime.
